“Science is what you know. Philosophy is what you don’t know” – Bertrand Russell
Are you a person who is excited to discover the things that you don’t ever know? If yes, it is called philosophy. It may be a study that people pursue to figure out basic truths about themselves, the world they live in, and their relationships to the world and to one another. So, to celebrate the profound impact of this philosophy on human thought, culture, and society, UNESCO has proclaimed ‘World Philosophy Day’ as an international day in 2002 to be celebrated on every 3rd Thursday of November. Since its inception by UNESCO, this day has served as a global platform to promote critical thinking, encourage philosophical discussion, and recognize the enduring value of philosophical reflection.
Philosophy is often described as the pursuit of wisdom through the examination of fundamental questions related to existence, knowledge, ethics, and reality. It is a discipline that encourages individuals to think critically, question assumptions, and explore the complexities of human experience. Through philosophy, we can address ethical disputes, wonder about the nature of reality, and seek to understand the world from different perspectives.
Philosophical thinking has played a pivotal role in shaping our understanding of the world. Philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau have profoundly influenced our social and political institutions, ethical frameworks, and scientific pursuits. Philosophy has also been instrumental in fostering intellectual discourse and expanding the boundaries of human knowledge.
Critical thinking is like a weapon to discover unknown facts. So, World Philosophy Day aims to promote critical thinking as an essential skill for navigating the challenges of the modern world. In an age of rapidly advancing technology and complex societal issues, the ability to think critically and engage in reasoned discussion is crucial. Philosophy provides a structured framework for addressing complex problems, developing well-reasoned arguments, and fostering a spirit of open inquiry.
And one of the most remarkable aspects of philosophy is its ability to intersect with various fields of study. It encourages interdisciplinary dialogue, allowing philosophers to engage with scientists, artists, theologians, and scholars from diverse backgrounds. This cross-pollination of ideas contributes to the enrichment of human knowledge and fosters innovative solutions to contemporary challenges.
Here, UNESCO has considered the cultural side of philosophy as well. It recognizes the rich tapestry of philosophical thought that has emerged from different cultures and traditions. Philosophy is not bound by geographical or cultural boundaries, and this celebration provides an opportunity to appreciate the diverse philosophies that have shaped the world. It encourages individuals to explore Eastern philosophies like Confucianism and Buddhism, as well as African, Indigenous, and Islamic philosophies that have made significant contributions to global intellectual heritage.
Also, it highlights the importance of philosophy in education. Philosophical inquiry fosters intellectual curiosity and encourages students to think critically, ask questions, and engage with complex issues. It helps students develop the skills necessary to become informed, thoughtful, and responsible citizens.
So, World Philosophy Day is a reminder of the enduring value of philosophical thought and its impact on our world. By promoting critical thinking, encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue, and celebrating cultural diversity, this day highlights the relevance of philosophy in our lives. Philosophy continues to serve as a powerful tool for addressing the challenges of the 21st century, and it invites individuals to explore the profound questions that define our existence. As we celebrate World Philosophy Day, let us recommit to the pursuit of wisdom and the never-ending quest for a better understanding of our world and ourselves.
