The Sri Lankan flag will be proudly raised once again on the island nation of Sri Lanka the morning of 4th February to commemorate 78 years since achieving independence from British rule. This day represents much more than just a day off; it’s a day to celebrate the bravery, strength, and determination of all those who came together to create our own nation in 1948.
As the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, we hold true to how closely Independence Day aligns with our values. Just as those who created a nation built on freedom and self-determination, we strive to create communities through service, leadership and friendship. The spirit of independence does not stop at reflecting back on our ancestors, but actively shapes the future of our country and our world through personal responsibility and hope.

This year, while watching Independence Day celebrations, we should all think about what it means to be the next generation and future leaders of Sri Lanka. The true meaning of independence is found in all of the acts of kindness that help build up a community, in all of the projects that benefit a community, and in all of the different ways we try to encourage those around us to learn and understand about each other and our diverse and wonderful cultures.
We encourage everyone to carry this spirit beyond the celebrations. Let’s honor the sacrifices of the past by committing to a present where we serve with compassion, lead with integrity, and unite for a brighter, more equitable Sri Lanka.
Happy Independence Day! May we continue to build a nation that is not only free but also filled with opportunity and peace for all!
