Path-Venture 2.0 was yet another unforgettable adventure organized by the Sports and Recreational Activities Avenue of the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. On October 12, 2025, around 70 enthusiastic participants embarked on a breathtaking hike to Hawagala, a stunning peak nestled in the Sabaragamuwa Province, near the serene town of Belihuloya. This event brought together adventure lovers to experience nature, teamwork, and the spirit of exploration at its finest.

Hawagala itself is steeped in local folklore. According to legend, king Ravana once pierced a rabbit while traveling from nearby Patupavakahinna Kanda, and the spot became known as “Ha Gala,” meaning “Rabbit Stone” in Sinhala. Over time, the name evolved into “Hawagala,” blending natural beauty with cultural heritage and myth.

The day began in the early evening, as all delegates gathered at the University’s Open Canteen at 5:00 AM. The organizing committee warmly welcomed everyone and provided breakfast to energize the group for the exciting journey ahead. Soon after, Chairperson Rtr. Matheesha and the Joint Director of the Sports and Recreational Activities Avenue, Rtr. Chirath Osanda conducted a brief meeting, informing the participants about the safety guidelines and event itinerary.

By 6:30 AM, two buses departed from the university premises, officially marking the beginning of Path-Venture 2.0. The morning air was filled with excitement and cheerful chatter as participants eagerly looked forward to the day’s adventure. Along the scenic route, laughter and music created a lively atmosphere within the buses. After a pleasant journey through the misty hills, the group arrived at Belihuloya, the gateway to Hawagala. Before the hike commenced, the organizing committee provided refreshments, ensuring that everyone was energized and ready to take on the challenge ahead.

At around 10:00 AM, the group reached the base of the Hawagala mountain, ready to begin their climb. The Organizing Committee members carried essential first-aid supplies and ensured that every participant was monitored throughout the hike. Adding to the safety measures, three professionals from the St. John Ambulance Association joined the journey, providing medical support and expert care whenever needed. The trail began along a concrete road that eventually came to an end, giving way to a narrow footpath that wound through tea plantations in the mountains. Along the way, participants crossed small waterways via two concrete “A-dandu” bridges, adding a touch of rural beauty to the journey. The path then led through pine forests, and eventually into dense wilderness, offering a variety of breathtaking landscapes.

As the hike continued, the trail became rougher and steeper. The participants trekked through thick forests, short grasslands, isolated pines, and scattered shrubs. When the team reached the summit of Hawagala, the weather changed suddenly and steady rain began. The top of the mountain became cold and windy, and visibility was low due to the mist. However, the delegates were prepared for such conditions and quickly used their umbrellas and raincoats to stay dry. Lunch was served at the summit as planned, and participants enjoyed their meal despite the cold. The rain continued for some time, and everyone worked together to manage the situation safely and comfortably.

After a while, the rain gradually stopped and the mist began to clear. The view around the mountain slowly opened, revealing the surrounding valleys and distant peaks. From the top of Hawagala, which has a relatively flat summit, hikers were rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view. The southern end of the Central Highlands, Nonpareil Estate, World’s End, Aadara Kanda, Pareiyangala, the Haputale range, and the southern side of Bandarawela could all be clearly seen. In the distance, the shimmering waters of Samanala Wewa and the vast Udawalawe and Balangoda regions came into sight, along with the majestic Dethanagala mountain. It was a rare and unforgettable moment of pure natural beauty.

With the weather improving, participants took the opportunity to capture photographs, enjoy the fresh air, and take in the peaceful environment at the top. Before leaving the summit, all delegates gathered for a group photograph with the event banner, marking a memorable moment before beginning the descent.

The descent presented a greater challenge than the climb. With the rain-soaked paths becoming slippery and leeches in great numbers along the way, hikers had to proceed with extra caution. Still, the glistening water droplets on pine needles and blades of grass made the scenery truly enchanting.

By 6:00 PM, all participants had safely returned to the base. Refreshments were served to help everyone relax and recharge. After an eventful day in nature, the group departed from Belihuloya around 6:30 PM, sharing stories and laughter during the journey back. Finally, by 10:30 PM, the two buses arrived at the university, marking the end of a long yet incredibly fulfilling day.

Path-Venture 2.0 was not just a hike — it was a celebration of friendship, endurance, and the natural beauty of Sri Lanka. The event also supported several Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action, Life on Land, and Partnerships for the Goals.

This unforgettable adventure to Hawagala left every participant with renewed energy, cherished memories, and a deeper appreciation for teamwork and the environment.
