Path-Venture 2.0 continued its journey of unforgettable adventures with Phase 2, a high-energy water rafting and canyoning experience at the stunning Kelani River in Kitulgala. Organized by the Sports and Recreational Activities Avenue of the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, this phase took place on 24th January 2026, bringing together approximately 40 enthusiastic participants eager to embrace adrenaline, teamwork, and the beauty of nature.
Water rafting at Kitulgala is an exhilarating experience that takes participants through the rapids of the Kelani River, surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills. The river’s challenging currents, occasional drops, and scenic beauty make it one of the most popular adventure activities in Sri Lanka. Students had the chance to navigate the rapids under the guidance of trained instructors, experience thrilling moments when boats capsized, and even swim in the refreshing river at the end of the journey.

The day kicked off bright and early, as all participants gathered at the University, buzzing with anticipation. The organizing committee greeted everyone warmly for the exciting day ahead. Shortly after, Chairperson Rtr. Matheesha and Joint Director of the Sports and Recreational Activities Avenue, Rtr. Chirath Osanda, held a brief meeting, outlining the safety guidelines and walking the participants through the day’s itinerary.
The day began bright and early, as all delegates assembled at the University premises at 6:30 a.m.. Excitement buzzed through the air as the group departed for Kitulgala. Along the way, refreshments were served, keeping everyone energized for the adventure that awaited. The scenic drive through the countryside set the mood, with laughter, music, and chatter echoing across the buses.
Arriving at Kitulgala at around 9:15 a.m., the participants were warmly welcomed by 37 Rafting Team Kithulgala, the professional water rafting guides. Students were provided with changing facilities and transformed into adventure-ready teams, equipped with life jackets and helmets. After a safety briefing and a detailed explanation of rafting techniques from the group advisor, Mr. Chiran, everyone was ready to tackle the rapids.
The Kelani River awaited, flowing swiftly through lush green forests and rocky banks, offering a perfect playground for adventure. Students hopped into six rafts, each guided by an expert instructor. The river roared and twisted, sending occasional splashes over the sides, making everyone laugh, shout, and paddle in unison. Some boats even capsized, resulting in spontaneous swimming sessions, bursts of laughter, and memories that would last a lifetime.
Over a 5 km stretch, participants worked together to navigate rapids, glide past scenic riverbanks, and enjoy the thrill of moving as one through nature’s untamed waters. At the end, everyone celebrated by swimming in the river, their faces glowing with exhilaration and joy.

For those who were unable to swim or felt hesitant about entering the water, the spirit of unity truly shone through. Fellow participants, guides, and organizers offered constant encouragement, ensuring that everyone felt safe, supported, and included. With life jackets securely fastened and expert supervision at all times, fears gradually turned into smiles and confidence. Hand in hand, the entire group stood together cheering, motivating, and celebrating each small victory. In that moment, all 40 participants were united as one team, sharing laughter, trust, and the joy of overcoming challenges together, making the experience not only thrilling but deeply meaningful and safe for everyone involved.

After rafting, the adventure continued with canyoning, guided by two instructors. Participants experienced three jumps and two slides, leaping from rocks and sliding into crystal-clear pools of water. Every jump tested courage, every slide brought laughter, and every cheer echoed across the canyon, creating a shared sense of thrill and accomplishment.
By 2:00 p.m., the canyoning adventure concluded, and students returned to the rafting base to change and enjoy a hearty lunch. The journey back to Colombo began at 4:30 p.m., with a stop for evening refreshments at Awissawella. On the bus, participants sang, danced, and recounted their favorite moments, keeping the energy alive until the final arrival at the University premises at around 8:00 p.m.
