Rota Avurudu 2025, organized by the Club Service Avenue and the Membership Development Committee of the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, was a vibrant celebration that beautifully blended traditional Sri Lankan New Year customs with the spirit of camaraderie and service. Held amidst the natural beauty of the university, this event provided a rich, cultural experience filled with joy, fun, and, most importantly, unity.
A Traditional Ambience
As guests arrived at the event, they were immediately struck by the exquisite traditional decorations that graced the venue. The entire space was beautifully adorned with traditional decors that set a warm, welcoming tone. The scent of fresh flowers filled the air, with a swing decorated in vibrant blooms being the highlight of the decor. The swing, symbolic of Sri Lankan Avurudu celebrations, added an element of nostalgia and joy, inviting everyone to sit and enjoy the moment. Adding to the charm, a large ground art was created, bringing life and color to the event. The kolam pattern reflected Sri Lankan artistry, with beautiful floral motifs and geometric designs, further enhancing the festive spirit. It was a perfect representation of the rich cultural heritage we celebrated during this special time of the year.
The Traditional Milk Boiling Ceremony
The event began with a heartwarming milk boiling ceremony, a ritual that holds deep significance in Sri Lankan culture. As the milk was boiled, we sought blessings for the club and its members, ensuring prosperity, unity, and success for the upcoming year. It was a moment of reflection and gratitude for all the hard work, service, and efforts made by the club in the past, and a hopeful start to the future. The boiling of milk signifies abundance and good fortune, setting the tone for a joyous and prosperous Avurudu celebration for all who attended.
Delicious Traditional Feast
The heart of every Avurudu celebration lies in the traditional food, and Rota Avurudu 2025 was no exception. A long, beautifully decorated food table awaited the guests, showcasing an array of traditional Sri Lankan delicacies. The aroma of Kevum, Kokis, Athirasa, and other sweetmeats filled the air, tempting everyone to indulge in the irresistible flavors. As we savored the traditional foods, it wasn’t just about the taste but also about the joy of sharing with friends and RACUSJ family. The food not only nourished our bodies but also our spirits, further reinforcing the sense of togetherness that permeated the entire event.

Fun and Friendly Traditional Games
No Avurudu celebration is complete without the traditional games, and Rota Avurudu 2025 brought out the competitive spirit in everyone. From the famous tug of war to sack races, the games brought out both laughs and challenges. With each event, members of the Rotaract Club showcased their teamwork, spirit, and enthusiasm.
Rota Avurudu Kumara and Kumariya 2025
The highlight of the day was the selection of the Rota Avurudu Kumara and Kumariya. After much anticipation and some lighthearted teasing, the winners were crowned, and their smiles radiated the pride and joy of the occasion. Their crowning moments were not just about the titles but about embodying the fun, spirit, and warmth of the Avurudu festival.

Celebrating Culture and Community
Rota Avurudu 2025 wasn’t just an event—it was a celebration of our shared cultural heritage and the strength of the Rotaract community. As we participated in the rituals, enjoyed traditional foods, and competed in the games, we were reminded of the importance of togetherness and unity.
Through Rota Avurudu 2025, we successfully contributed to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by fostering cultural appreciation, inclusivity, and community engagement. The project promoted Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) through joyful activities and social connection; enhanced Quality Education (SDG 4) by creating awareness and appreciation for traditional customs; and supported Gender Equality (SDG 5) through equal representation in activities such as the selection of Avurudu Kumara and Kumariya. By bringing together members from diverse backgrounds, the event also worked toward Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) and the promotion of Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) through the celebration and preservation of cultural heritage. Moreover, the event strengthened the sense of unity and peace within the club, aligning with Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16), while the collaborative effort between committees reflected Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
We began with the shared blessings of the milk boiling ceremony, indulged in the delicacies of Sri Lankan Avurudu food, and shared laughter through traditional games. By the end of the day, we had not only enjoyed the festivities but had also grown closer as a family—a family united by the shared mission of service and growth. Rota Avurudu ‘25 was not just about celebrating our roots, but also about looking forward to the future with hope and determination. With the blessings of the milk boiling ceremony, the crowned Kumara and Kumariya, and the spirit of unity and joy, we are excited to continue working together in service, friendship, and development. A heartfelt gratitude to the Club Service Avenue and the Membership Development Committee for organizing such a memorable and enriching event. Rota Avurudu ‘25 will undoubtedly go down as one of the most special celebrations in the history of the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
