World Olympics 2020

Aug 11, 2021 | News | 1 comment

Olympic Games is undoubtedly the most celebrated and prestigious sporting event to ever take place.

Olympics is considered as “THE sporting event” with more than 200 nations taking part in it. With over a thousand athletes competing in a variety of competitions, winning a medal is more than just a dream for an athlete.

World Olympics are held in two formats, Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics, where former is considered the most famous since the participation is marked by countries all over the globe.

The Olympic Games is generally held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years in the four-year period. However, Summer Olympics which was to be held in 2020 was postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A sneak peek at the history of the Olympics

The creation of the games was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games which were held back in the days in Olympia, Greece. The name “Olympics” was derived from the Greek name Olympia in which the event took place.

The first version of the modern Olympics was held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Over the course of years, especially during the 20th and 21st centuries, the Olympic movement has undergone several modifications to come up with, Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, Paralympics for the disabled athletes, and quite recently introduced Youth Olympics for athletes aged 14 to 18.

Sri Lanka’s success at the Olympics

Being a tropical island, Sri Lanka has never participated in the Winter Olympics. It has only taken part in the Summer Olympics, Paralympics, and Youth Olympics. Sri Lanka’s first-ever medal came in at the 1948 Olympics when Duncan White placed second in the 400 m hurdles.

It took the country more than half a century to clinch its second medal and that was at the Millennial Olympics (2000 Sydney Olympics) when Susanthika Jayasinghe placed third in the 200 m women’s event. She initially won a bronze and later was awarded the silver medal after Marion Jones was stripped off for drug usage.

Sri Lanka is yet to win a medal after the 2000 Olympics. In other words, we are on a medal hunt. Sri Lankans are yet to witness some exceptional performances from the many gifted and skilled athletes.

Sri Lanka at the Tokyo Olympics

9 athletes in total were selected to represent Sri Lanka at this year’s Tokyo Olympics representing 7 sports.

However, none of them were able to advance into the next round, shattering Sri Lanka’s hopes of a medal from the first rounds itself.

Winning an Olympic medal is definitely not easy. You need extreme talent, generous amounts of luck, and most importantly good coaching.

No matter how talented you are, it is essential one receives correct guidance and support to play to their strengths by improving the best possible technique. Though we received no medals, being an Olympian itself is quite an achievement.

Hopefully, with proper attention and priority to these talented individuals, we will be able to see them improve to aim for a medal. As the saying goes, if there’s a will, there’s a way.

On a positive note, Parami Wasanthi Maristella brought glory to Sri Lanka when she came in third in the 2000m steeplechase at the 2018 Youth Olympics held in Argentina. Her dazzling performance gave Sri Lanka its first-ever Youth Olympic medal.

Last but surely not least, a big shout-out to our very own two athletes who shone bright like diamonds at the Paralympics. Pradeep Sanjaya won the bronze in men’s 400 m T46 at London Paralympics and Dinesh Herath too won the bronze in men’s javelin throw F46 at Rio Paralympics. Sri Lanka will be competing in this year’s Paralympics, and the hopes are once again high for medals.

World Olympics 2020 ended with such glamour amidst a pandemic, but Sri Lanka does not give up hope on seeing a day our talented athletes bring glory to our country at the next Olympic games.
