In the grand symphony of existence, life is the melody that combines us through both serenity and turmoil. “There is a light within every storm, even when the clouds feel endless; Reaching out is the first step of finding the sunshine hidden behind the darkness.” This sentence emphasizes the idea that even in the hardest times, hope and support are there to guide someone through. In the quiet moment of our hurried lifestyle, there are various types of stories unfolding that we never witness; Silent conflicts, hidden battles, and unheard expresses for support.
Suicide is a major public health issue with far-reaching social, psychological and economic consequences. Worldwide instances of suicide have been estimated at approximately 700,000 per year, and we comprehend that each suicide has a significant impact on numerous additional people. According to the World Health Organization, on September 10th of every year, World Suicide Prevention Day is observed internationally. This day is not just a date on calendar, but also serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health, physical health and well-being. As we all are aware, the theme for this day often revolves around “Creating hope through action”. It can emphasize that by making correct decisions and taking the right steps, we can live safely. The impact of suicide can extend far beyond individual; it spreads mainly to their families, and also entire communities in the social background.
There are various types of reasons behind the suicide process. Those are very complex and multifaceted. As we all are aware, Struggling to cope with certain difficulties in your life can cause you to feel hopeless – at times even suicidal. These difficulties may include mental health conditions such as depression & anxiety and also rare problems, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Trauma plays a significant role, but social factors like isolation or loneliness, different types of abuse – including domestic, sexual or physical abuse, economic hardship, bullying, prejudice or stigma, such as relating to your race, gender, disability or sexual identity, bereavement, including losing a loved one to suicide, the end of a relationship, money problems, feelings of inadequacy or feeling like a failure, unplanned pregnancy, pregnancy, childbirth, or postnatal depression, cultural pressure, such as forced marriage, society’s expectations – in example, the expectation to act a certain way or achieve certain things. And also, suicidal feelings affects all ages, genders, and all backgrounds, but recently it is especially moving among vulnerable populations of youth.
Every year, World Suicide Prevention day focuses to spread awareness surrounding suicide, educating people on how to recognize and control this situation. Their main aims are gaining warning signs and promoting a good mental health support system. Good mental health means being generally able to think, feel and react in the way that you need and want to live your life.
Preventing suicidal feelings requires multifaceted approaches. The first one is recognizing the warning signs, such as expressing the feelings of hopelessness or being a burden, withdrawing from friends, family, and activities, giving away possessions or saying goodbye to loved ones, or drastic behavior changes. Recognizing and taking action when these signs arise can save lives.
Then, encouraging open conversation and honest discussion with the combination of understanding of mental health and suicidal feelings is a major prevention step in the world. Talking openly can also reduce the stigma and lets individuals know they are not alone. When someone expresses their suicidal thoughts or sorrow, you should take much more time to listen to their problems without judgment and show empathy. And, you should avoid dismissing their feelings or offering quick fixes.
Isolation or loneliness is a major factor that can be victimized by suicidal thoughts. We should always encourage people, especially vulnerable youth to maintain strong bonds through their surrounding support system such as family, friendship or community groups. All of them, mentioned above can offer emotional support and reduce the dark feelings and sorrow.
The government of all countries should raise awareness in schools and universities about how to prevent and control the strong feelings of stressfulness. During childhood, a child’s background should be very calm to enroll the social cultural situation. Educational platforms can help individuals recognize signs of distress in themselves and in others, as well as provide them with the tool to seek help or intervene when necessary. And also, crisis intervention services such as suicide prevention hotlines and online chat services provide immediate help to individuals in distress. The main solution is encouraging individuals who are experiencing suicidal thoughts or feelings to seek help from mental health professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors or social workers. They can provide specialized care through therapy and when necessary, medication.
In conclusion, World Suicide Prevention Day reminds us that “Even in the darkest moments, there is always a glimmer of hope waiting to be discovered.” It calls on us to spread the light for others in the darkest moments, to listen with compassion and to encourage them to start a new chapter in their life journey. As we all know, life is a journey filled with highs and lows, and despite the hardships we face, it is worth living until our final breath. In my mind, every day offers the chance for new experiences, growth and connection. So, we should embrace the moments of joy, happiness, and beauty that life brings. A main reference for exploring those questions of “what is life?” and “How do I spend my life?” even in times of struggling is, “We must remember that the storms we face are temporary, and there is always the possibility of brighter days ahead.” So, life is precious, and we should live it fully, savoring each moment until it naturally reaches its end.
