The Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayawardenepura kick started the new Rotaract year 2017/2018 with an act of benevolence through the community service project ‘Shilpa.’

The project upheld the motto ‘The hands that help are holier than the lips that pray,” by conducting a seminar for advanced level students of Vidyaraja National College, Thawalama, which was adversely affected by the recent floods. On the 8th of July 2017, a full day seminar was organized on behalf of the arts and commerce stream students for the subjects of Political Science, Sinhala, Economics and Accounting respectively.

The seminar was conducted by our very own Rotaractors. They shared not only subject matter, but also life experience with the youngsters and a few consolation prizes were given out for the students who showcased their outstanding knowledge. By going an extra mile, Rotaractors even shared lunch and refreshments with the students. Tokens of appreciation were presented to Roaractors too, for their nerve wracking hard work.

Our heart-felt gratitude is extended to the vise-chancellor of USJP Prof. Sampath Amarathunga and the staff advisors for being guiding lights throughout our journey. A special thank goes to the organizing committee and all the individuals who contributed to make this event a success. We were able to witness tears of gratitude and joy of the newly made friends at the end of the day and look forward to build better friendships enhancing the theme for the year ‘Engage Rotaract, Redefine Friendship’ through similar projects in future.
