“Vidusaviya 2019” is a project organized by the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura under the avenue of community services to empower the underprivileged students in rural areas with technology, by providing them with required equipment to access such knowledge. For this initiative the ‘Kuli/Sri Dhammarathana Kanishta Vidyalaya, Ihala Diyadora, Wewagama’ was selected as it was adversely affected by the floods that occurred in 2018 destroying the school computer lab and library.

Few members of the organizing committee first visited the Kuli/Sri Dhammarathana Kanishta Vidyalaya in October 2018 after receiving a call from the school ICT teacher regarding the hardships faced by the students of the school. The committee returned after identifying the areas that needed support and reinforcements as well as a promise to donate the necessary digital equipment to the computer lab and books to the library to help them recover and stand up.

The committee collected donations from members of the club and from non-members as well throughout the year. Our donations to the school which educates 162 students from grade 01 to grade 11 entailed;

8 Laptops

1 All in one printer/ scanner/ copier machine

Stationery items

More than 600 library books

The project was carried out with the advocacy of the London Stock Exchange Group, countless donors/ well-wishers as well as the hard work and commitment of the rotaractors of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura whose sole intention was to lend a help in hand and put a smile on the faces of these kids who required support to blossom into the well-equipped youth vital for the prosperity of the future.

“Vidusaviya 2019” transpired on the 4th of June at the Kuli/Sri Dhammarathana Kanishta Vidyalaya with the presence of the students, parents and the academic staff of the school as well as the sponsor, Ms. Mubina Mohamed from the London Stock Exchange Group. A representative of the said organization, Mr. Bilal Hassen conducted an interactive session for all the students and teachers on the contemporary topic of “Information Technology” and how the use of computers is vital for the survival in today’s world. He further stated that it was up to the students as the victims of the said natural disaster, to coexist as a group to face the consequences in order to rise up again harder and stronger.

The donations were offered to the students at the glamorous event organized by the parents and teachers of the school which was decorated by entertainment items prepared and presented by the students themselves to showcase both their talents and gratitude towards this initiative.“Vidusaviya” was organized with three main objectives namely donating laptops, books and stationery to the computer lab and the library, directing the attention of society towards such worthy causes and finally to uplift the IT related knowledge and wellbeing of the students in the school. With the fulfillment of these aspirations, “Vidusaviya 2019” concluded successfully building the foundation to empower the future of the students of Kuli/Sri Dhammarathana Kanishta Vidyalaya.
