“Vidusaviya” was a project organized by the Community Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura aiming the students who sat for the O/L examination in December 2019. Wethara Maha Vidyalaya was selected for this initiative out of the many schools as it had a lot of students who have the potential but lack resources for their studies. Therefore, we thought of providing them with the required study materials by conducting a seminar series which is beneficial for the O/L examination.

Firstly, few members of the organizing committee visited the Wethara Maha Vidyalaya to meet the principal in order to discuss about the project plan and its vision and mission. A senior teacher of the school also helped the committee members to identify the hardships faced by the O/L students of the school. The committee members also discussed with the O/L students of the school about the subject areas they need help the most so that we could make the seminars effective. The committee promised to give their maximum support to the students by providing them with extra knowledge and extra skills to face the examination.

The seminar series started by giving priority to the request which was made by the school to conduct a seminar series for practical examinations (Art, Music and Dancing). After finishing the practical seminars, the seminars for the other 7 subjects were held. They were Mathematics, Sinhala, Science, Buddhism, English, Commerce and ICT. We managed to conduct the seminars on four days and we were able to get a food sponsorship for two days from Glanrich Pvt Ltd as well.

“Vidusaviya” has 4 main phases namely Book Collection Drive, O/L seminar series, constructing the required areas of the school including washrooms and an IT workshop. The committee collects books from members of the club and non-members as well throughout these days to accomplish the first phase of the project.

The second phase of the project was successfully ended by achieving its main objectives which were enhancing the subject knowledge of the students and assisting them to apply the gained knowledge for the examination and helping them to clarify the subject related doubts and matters they had. Most importantly we were able to build up the students’ mentality to face the examination by helping them to avoid exam stress and exam fear and by building up their confidence for the exam.

Vidusaviya phase 2 was concluded successfully educating the next generation of Wethara Maha Vidyalaya to become well-educated citizens in the country.
