In the fast-paced world of academia, quiz competitions are far more than a test of knowledge; rather, they are a celebration of learning, teamwork, and expanding one’s horizons. Events of this kind ignite curiosity, foster critical thinking skills, and transform education into an exhilarating journey.

“Eureka,” the ultimate quiz competition, the first of its kind, was initiated by the membership development committee of the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The aim of this project was to test the knowledge and skills of participants through a series of fun and engaging quizzes and games while forging lasting friendships and memories. We brought the focus to teamwork by requiring participants to form teams of three to help foster collaboration and the spirit of teamwork.

The event was scheduled to kick off physically with a combination of both academic-based quizzes and thrilling games, but, due to unforeseen circumstances, it could not be held as initially planned and had to be held as a virtual event. Despite the challenges encountered, the organizing committee remained determined and undeterred in their quest to pull off a successful event that was fun and intellectually stimulating.

The ‘Eureka’ quiz competition was held on May 19, 2024, via Google Meets. The event kicked off with the welcome speech delivered by the chairperson of the project, Rtr. Sachini Ukwatte. This was followed by the first round of the competition, consisting of a series of rapid questions, guess the country or film, and questions on a video screened. This round showcased the quick wit and synergy of the teams. The three highest-scoring teams progressed to the second round, which consisted of two games: What’s in the Box and Guess the Celebrity, adding a fun twist to the traditional quiz format. With the fire to battle it out for the win, two teams advanced to the third and final round, which consisted of a series of academic questions followed by an impromptu speech and an impromptu drama segment, where teams had to combine their knowledge and communication skills to emerge victorious. It was a true testament to the power of teamwork in this ultimate test of knowledge.

Team Mavericks were crowned winners, while Team Alpha emerged as runners-up in the competition. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Rtr. Suresha, the secretary of the project. The ‘Eureka’ quiz competition was a resounding success thanks to the hard work and commitment of the organizing committee members and the enthusiastic participation of all the teams. The event highlighted the importance of teamwork, healthy rivalry, and friendships while proving to be a fun and insightful learning experience. The competition wasn’t just about winning. It was about fostering a sense of community, encouraging friendly competition, and, most importantly, having a whole lot of fun!
