“A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children”

John James Audubon

The natural resources of our earth are minerals, water, sunlight, air, and soil. These items are all found in nature and are utilized by humans. At the moment, there are around 8 billion people on the planet. By 2037, this figure is anticipated to surpass 9 billion. These individuals all regularly utilize the natural resources of the planet. Many people are worried that these resources may run out because they are being used up so quickly. Because of this, a lot of people and groups emphasize how crucial it is to protect our natural resources.

Conservation: What is it?

The prudent management and preservation of the environment and natural resources is known as conservation. It’s a proactive approach to ensuring that the wonders of our natural world – from vast forests to the tiniest insects – are safeguarded for future generations.

Nature plays an essential role in supporting life on Earth, besides maintaining the overall balance of the planet. So, nature conservation is very important for today. Thus, there has been a proposal for a global day for nature conservation.

Every year, World Nature Conservation Day is observed on July 28 globally. The day aims to raise awareness about preserving and protecting the environment and natural resources. World Nature Conservation Day serves as a reminder of the environment’s critical role in sustaining life on Earth. It highlights the need for sustainable practices to ensure a healthy planet for future generations so that even they can enjoy being in the company of nature.

World Nature Conservation Day began in India with those who were concerned about protecting the Earth’s natural resources. The Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Center in New Delhi promotes the day. The Department of Environment, the Ministry of Environment and Forests, and the Government of India sponsor ENVIS. Many countries have joined India in observing this important day for our planet.

The theme for World Nature Conservation Day 2024 is ‘Connecting People and Plants, Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation’. The theme ‘Connecting People and Plants, Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation’ highlights the interconnected-ness of human society, nature, and technology. It calls for a holistic approach to conservation that leverages both traditional ecological knowledge and cutting-edge technological advancements. By embracing this theme, we can work towards a future where humans live in harmony with nature, ensuring the health and diversity of our planet for generations to come.

This day holds great significance as it focuses attention to the pressing need to solve environmental issues like deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss. By promoting conservation efforts, it aims to foster a collective responsibility to protect and preserve our natural environment.

The good news is that we can preserve our natural resources in a few easy steps. Consider water-According to some scientists, the water supply on our planet will run out by 2050. Reducing water usage is among the simplest ways to conserve it. You can achieve this by utilizing shorter showers, turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth, and irrigation with rainwater. There are other methods for protecting the environment. They are,

  1. Plant trees to reduce soil erosion.
  2. Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
  3. Carpool with co-workers.
  4. Shut off the lights when leaving a room.
  5. Go digital instead of printing things on paper.
  6. Volunteer for community cleanups.
  7. Use non-toxic cleaning supplies.
  8. Make your own compost.

If everyone does their part, our planet’s natural resources will be available for years to come.

Remember;

Don’t let mother nature become “once upon a time”.
