Protecting and conserving the diverse ecosystems of our world is one of the most important goals of wildlife conservation. It entails the administration and protection of various animal species, their habitats, and their ecosystems. The importance of protecting wildlife cannot be stressed because it is essential for preserving ecological balance, advancing sustainable development, and safeguarding the welfare of both animals and people.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations “Life on Land,” and “Life below Water” largely cover the SDG linked to animal conservation. Terrestrial ecosystems are the primary emphasis of this objective, which also emphasizes biodiversity promotion, land degradation prevention, and sustainably managing terrestrial ecosystems.

To take a first step to protect the animal community, the Environmental Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura worked on the project, “Animalia 3.0”. In phase one, our team volunteered at the Hiyare Wild Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre and donated some of the needful items to the centre and gave them non-monetary support as well.

Endangered snakes have a significant role in ecosystems and biodiversity. Their preservation guarantees the upkeep of natural harmony, offers insightful information about the state of the environment, and enhances prospects for cultural heritage and commerce. It is crucial to preserve indigenous snake species for both their own survival and the health of the ecosystems in which they live. But most of the time these species are neglected or harmed due to human actions. So to raise awareness of the importance of snakes to our nature, in our 2nd phase, we published a post series highlighting endemic snakes in Sri Lanka.

Stray dogs may wander the streets, but in their hearts, they carry the resilience and loyalty that can mend even the deepest wounds. Understanding the value of stray dogs extends beyond considering them only as a problem. They are important for the well-being of animals, human health, ecosystem balance, emotional health, fostering of community relationships, and educational possibilities. We can address the needs of stray dogs while also helping human communities and the environment by putting ethical management practices into practice. In our final phase, our team gathered and offered a nourishing meal to stray dogs, roaming around our university premises, making sure that the bond between them is valued.

It’s impossible to overstate the value of protecting wildlife. Maintaining biodiversity, advancing ecosystem services, and fostering sustainable development all depend on protecting and preserving animal species, their habitats, and ecosystems. The protection of wildlife also has positive effects on the economy, advances science, and has spiritual and cultural significance. Protecting the astounding variety of life on Earth and ensuring peaceful coexistence between people and animals are collective responsibilities. We create a more sustainable and affluent future for future generations by supporting wildlife conservation.
