In 2011, the idea of Global Media and Information Literacy Week was born in Fez, Morocco. The week was established under UNESCO’s leadership in 2012. The UNESCO-U.N.A.O.C Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue University Network and the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance supported to launch this week. Now it is observed from October 24th to 31st every year. The International Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue Conference and The Youth Agenda Forum are featured events of Global Media and Information Literacy Week.

2022 වසරට යෙදෙන එකොළොස් වන ගෝලීය මාධ්‍ය හා තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතා සතියේ තේමාව වන්නේ “අන්‍යෝන්‍ය විශ්වාසය පෝෂණය කිරීම උදෙසා මාධ්‍ය සහ තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතාව අත්‍යවශ්‍ය වේ” යන්නයි.

මෙම සතිය තුළදී වෘත්තීන්, සදාචාරයන් හා දේශසීමා විනිවිද යමින්, ගෝලීය වශයෙන් මාධ්‍ය හා තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතාවය ඇති කිරීමෙහිලා පහසුකම් සැලසීමේ අරමුණෙන් යුතුව විවිධ වූ වැඩසටහන් ලොව පුරා දියත් වීමට නියමිතයි. මෙවසර ගෝලීය මාධ්‍ය හා තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතා සතියෙහි ප්‍රධාන විශේෂාංගයන් ද්විත්වයට සත්කාරකත්වය ලබා දෙන්නේ නයිජීරියාවයි.

This week reminds the global community about the importance of global media and information literacy and how they have become essential for the development of oneself.

Media and information literacy ensure the ability of people to show and make an informed judgement as well as to become skilful and ethical creators of media and information in their own right and responsibility. They further improve essential skills such as critical thinking, analysis, self-expression, creativity, and public speaking, which are necessary for citizens in a democratic society.

මාධ්‍ය හා තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතාවය යන්නට දැනුම, ආකල්ප හා කුමන තොරතුරු, කෙලෙසින්, කුමන විටෙක භාවිත කළ යුතුදැයි හඳුනාගැනීමේ හැකියාව ආදී කුසලතාද ඇතුළත් වේ. ගෝලීය මාධ්‍ය හා තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතාවය පිළිබඳව දැනුවත් වීම ඔස්සේ, විවිධ මූලාශ්‍රයන් හරහා ගලා එන තොරතුරු තාර්කිකව අධ්‍යයනය කර තීරණ ගැනීමට සමාජය යොමු වන අතර ඒ සඳහා වාචික, ලිඛිත හෝ ඩිජිටල් මාධ්‍ය නිසි ලෙස භාවිතා කිරීමටත් සමාජයට හුරුවක් ලැබෙනු ඇත. එමෙන්ම තොරතුරු පදනම් සමාජයක් තුළ අහිතකර බලපෑම් අවම කරමින් ප්‍රතිලාභදායී පුරවැසි සම්බන්ධතා පවත්වා ගැනීමටද හැකියාව ලැබේ.

ගෝලීය වශයෙන් මෙම දැනුවත්භාවය වර්ධනය වන්නේ නම්, එය සමාජ සාමය, සමානාත්මතාවය සහ භාව ප්‍රකාශනය, සංවාද ඇති කිරීම, තොරතුරු දැනගැනීම ආදී වූ මානව අයිතීන් තහවුරු කිරීමට රුකුළක් වන්නාක් මෙන්ම තිරසාර සංවර්ධනය සඳහාද උරදෙනු ඇත.

In addition, this week allows the community to rethink the role of the media and information and how critical and outstanding they are. It helps in creating and shaping public opinion and strengthening society.

Also, the media creates public awareness and ensures the protection of the public interest. It also empowers democracy. The media gets our message across to a wider audience. That is why we should consider Global Media and Information Literacy and ensure the ethical behaviour of those using media and information.

To fulfil their duty in promoting media and information literacy, people celebrate Global Media and Information Literacy Week through activities such as organizing a Media and Information Literacy Day in their community, holding events or activities in their cities, using social media to raise awareness about media and information literacy in civil society, joining the Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL), promoting UNESCO’s publications and actions, and promoting or enrolling in the media and information literacy online course.

තොරතුරු ඔස්සේ බලගැන්වුණු ගෝලීය ආර්ථිකයත් සමඟ ඉතා දුශ්කර තරඟයක නියැලෙන දිවයිනක පුරවැසියන් වන අප, මෙම ගෝලීය මාධ්‍ය හා තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතාවයේ වැදගත්කම ඉතා හොඳින් අවධාරණය කරගත යුතු වෙමු.

මන්ද යත් ඩිජිටල්කරණය වූ තොරතුරු ධාරාවන් සමඟ ගනුදෙනු කරන අප රටේ තිරසාර සංවර්ධනයට උරදීමට නම්, අප පුරවැසියන් ලෙස මාධ්‍ය හා තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතාවය තුළින් වෘත්තිමය, ආචාරධර්මීය හා දේශාන්තර අභියෝග ජය ගැනීමේ විභවය සහිත පිරිසක් විය යුතුයි. එම අවශ්‍යතාවය අවබෝධයෙන් හැඳින, අප මෙම ගෝලීය මාධ්‍ය හා තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතා සතියේදී මෙරට මෙන්ම ලෝකයේ සියලු දෙනා අතර අන්‍යෝන්‍ය විශ්වාසය සුරැකෙන පරිදි වන, සදාචාරසම්පන්න හා වගකීම් සහගත මාධ්‍ය භාවිතයක් ඇතිකිරීමටත් එතුළින් තොරතුරු සාක්ෂරතාවය තහවුරු කිරීමටත් කැපවෙමු.
