Milad means ‘birth’ in Arabic, and ‘Milad Un Nabi’ refers to the birth of Prophet Muhammad. Muslims commemorate it on the 12th of Rabi al Awwal (The 3rd month of the Islamic lunar calendar), reflecting on the life of Prophet Muhammad, who was deeply loved by people worldwide. Born in Mecca in 570 CE to Aminah and Abdullah, Prophet Muhammad faced personal loss early, losing his father before birth and his mother at the age of six. Orphaned, he was raised by his grandfather and later his uncle. Despite these hardships, Prophet Muhammad became known for his integrity, earning titles like Al-Ameen (the Trustworthy) and As-Saadiq (the Truthful). Long before becoming a prophet at forty, his honesty and compassion shaped his reputation.

Prophet Muhammad’s life holds universal lessons for humanity, making him one of the most influential figures in history, as noted in Michael H. Hart’s The 100. Throughout his life, Prophet Muhammad exemplified numerous qualities that have inspired people across the globe. These values—compassion, humility, forgiveness, and respect—were not confined to his personal relationships but extended to his interactions with the wider community.

Compassion for All

One of the most striking traits of Prophet Muhammad was his compassion. A well-known story involves an elderly woman in Mecca who threw garbage in his path daily. Instead of responding with anger, Prophet Muhammad remained patient. One day, when she was absent, he visited her to check on her well-being. Surprised by his kindness, she realized the depth of his character and later embraced Islam. This incident reflects his attitude of forgiveness, kindness, and concern for all, including those who opposed him. In a world often divided, his example of compassion transcends differences and remains relevant today.

Humility in Leadership

Despite being the leader of an entire community, Prophet Muhammad’s humility was remarkable. When a nervous man approached him, the Prophet reassured him, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am not a king. I am the son of a woman who used to eat dried meat”. He helped with household chores, mended his clothes, and sat on the ground with others, treating everyone equally. His humility serves as a lesson for all leaders today, showing that greatness lies in modesty and closeness to people.

Forgiveness and Mercy

One of the most powerful examples of Prophet Muhammad’s ability to forgive occurred during the conquest of Mecca. After enduring years of persecution, the Prophet entered Mecca as a victorious leader. Many expected him to take revenge, but he chose forgiveness, declaring, “This day there is no blame on you; go, for you are free.” This act of mercy stunned the people of Mecca, and it continues to inspire millions. His ability to heal old wounds through forgiveness exemplifies true leadership.

Respect for People of All Faiths

Prophet Muhammad also demonstrated respect for people of other faiths. A notable example is when a Christian delegation from Najran visited Medina. He allowed them to conduct their religious services in his mosque, showing respect for their beliefs. Additionally, the “Constitution of Medina,” which he drafted with the tribes in the city, ensured religious freedom for all, including Jews and pagans, highlighting his commitment to justice and mutual respect. His efforts to build a pluralistic society emphasize that peaceful coexistence and respect for different beliefs are essential values.

As a Family Man

Prophet Muhammad was known for his kindness and empathy toward his family. His marriage to Aisha Binth Abu Bakr was filled with affection and mutual respect. A well-known story illustrates their playful relationship: they once raced, and Aisha won. Later, when the Prophet won a rematch, he laughed and said, “This one is for that one,” highlighting his loving nature. His deep bond with his daughter Fatimah is another example of his tenderness. Whenever she visited, the Prophet would stand up to greet her, kiss her forehead, and offer her his seat, a rare act of affection at a time when women were not always treated with such respect. It demonstrated his belief in the dignity and importance of women.

The above are mere minute fragments from the millions of examples we can take from the Prophet’s life. As Sri Lankan Muslims, this is the third religious holiday apart from the two Eids, and it is the only Islamic holy day of the year that is a Mercantile Holiday, which implies its importance. Many years ago, when mosques throughout the island used to arrange feasts, feed the poor and engage in activities that united communities regardless of their faith. But very few commemorate Milad Un Nabi at present and very few abide by the teachings of the Prophet. As we reflect on his life, as Muslims or non-Muslims, we can find inspiration in his examples of leadership, empathy, and moral integrity. For anybody who is curious to read on the life of Prophet Muhammad, I’d recommend “Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources” by the British author, Martin Lings. The Prophet’s teachings remind us of the importance of compassion, justice, and coexistence in our own lives, making Milad Un Nabi a day to celebrate not only the birth of a religious figure but also the timeless principles that his life embodied.
