The Environmental Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, with immense pride, has launched its Article Series to acknowledge prominent days pertaining to the environment. Starting off the Rotaract year for 2021-22 with the seventh step of the series, World Nature Conservation Day 2021.

From the fresh air we breathe to the clean water we drink, nature provides the essentials we all rely on for our survival and well-being. These interrelated components provide a basis for the Earth’s existence maintaining it through many cyclic processes which have unique and very systematic approaches.

The proper balance of all these components in nature provides us with a survivable environment. Nature is nothing but our entire life-support system.

Unfortunately, the continual development of industrialization, deforestation, and many other human-related advancements cause harmful sometimes disastrous effects on nature. This critical issue is now under the consideration of lots of discussions to solve the serious consequences that would be unstoppable to a great degree.

Need for a World Nature Conservation Day

Compared to other living organisms, humans are more dependent on natural resources heavily. Air, water, food, trees, minerals, humans have the most demand for daily consumption.

However, due to world population growth, environmental pollution, illegal wildlife trade, poor resources management, and other human activities result in a natural imbalance threatening to the other animal species and failing them to survive and to maintain the ecosystem as well as valuable biodiversity behind them. If we run out of such resources, humans will also have to face mass extinction as the other species do.

Therefore, every year on the 28th of July Nature Conservation Day is dedicated to making a global level of awareness to enlighten the people about protecting and conserving natural resources. This is indeed an encouragement to arise the sustainability for our future generation’s survival and their witnessing of flora and fauna.

To focus on conserving nature on a particular day and to promote the concept of conserving nature throughout this Rotaract year we, the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura have chosen “Together to sustain life on earth through unity” as our theme. This would be a remarkable attempt to take some courage as an impactful movement to save a lot in a very organized manner.

How do we conserve nature?

To step into major conservation, we all can begin it from our house or residential areas. Proper garbage separation and disposal, managing organic waste are the best starting points.

As a country, if a great impact is to be expected, it is better to plan towns and countries to avoid the reduction of green cover around them. To stop harmful human activities toward the environment, strengthening rules and regulations provides very methodical ways to prevent those. Considering waterbodies and their underlying biodiversity, we all can engage in aquatic plantations, water body clean-ups, and financial help for the organizations responsible for these kinds of conservation projects.

All the small attempts we make individually considered together can make a giant step. So despite our nationality, religion, social status, geolocation, and other factors that divide us as an individual but as a global citizen living on this very Earth, let’s take a little courage to save a lot around us.
