The Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, being one of the most diverse clubs, it’s not much of a difficulty to gather a bunch of movie lovers to have a movie evening with fun, enjoyment and laughter. The finance committee initiated their first fund-raiser for the year with the intention of getting the movie lovers of the club together, to get to know the ‘think alike’s’ from a member base of 300+ members. The project grabbed the attention of Rotaractors as well as Non-Rotaractors paving the way to have an open week for the club. Extending the fellowship to the university community, the Movie Marathon was open to any university student despite their faculty or year.

The week from 17th to the 21st of July was a week to indulge anybody in Moviemania. Four movies to suite the different tastes of our members were screened throughout the whole week. Starting from ‘Moana’, to ‘Dear Zindagi’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ‘As One’ (Korean) and ‘Fate of the Furious’, every movie screened was loved by all those who joined in. With an average turnout of 60 people for each movie, the fund-raiser was a success in its own terms.

‘Movie Marathon 2017’ was not like the same old movie marathons you find in universities. Creating a sense of fellowship among all participants was one of the objectives of the project. Fellowship without food? This is where we made the difference! Being the first ever club to provide snacks during the intermission of the movie. This took the movie experience to a whole new level of redefining friendship.

The finance committee is much grateful to the Administration of the university for the facilities provided and to all the directors and members who supported in every possible way to make the project a success. ‘Movie Marathon 2017’ concluded with getting people to “#EngageRotaract and #RedefineFriendship.”
