Some memories stay in photographs. Some live in old messages, familiar faces, laughter shared between friends, and moments we never thought would become unforgettable.

And then there are memories that only need one question to bring them back:

“What’s your favourite RACUSJ memory?”

That simple question became the beginning of Memory Lane, a Public Relations initiative of the Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, created to celebrate the club’s 16th Charter Day.

Rather than simply looking back at sixteen years of achievements, Memory Lane invited the RACUSJ community to remember the journey through the moments they experienced, the people they met, and the memories they carried with them.

It Started With a Memory

Memory Lane began by asking members and past members to pause and remember their favourite RACUSJ moments. These could have come from a major project, a simple conversation, a friendship, a late-night preparation, a celebration, or an unexpected moment that became special with time.

The response transformed the campaign from something created about memories into something created by memories.

The memories shared by the community were brought back to the RACUSJ community through the campaign, allowing one person’s recollection to become another person’s reminder of a moment they had almost forgotten.

Some memories brought back people.
Some brought back places.
Some brought back projects.
And some simply brought back a feeling.

Together, they became a collection of the moments that made the RACUSJ journey meaningful.

Sixteen Years, One Journey

As RACUSJ celebrated its 16th Charter Day on 1 September, Memory Lane also looked back at the journey that made these memories possible.

The 16 Years of RACUSJ carousel traced the club’s journey from its beginning on 1 September 2011, when RACUSJ was founded as the Rotaract club at the university, through its growth in membership, avenues, projects, leadership, achievements, and milestones.

From a vision that began in 2011 to a community of more than 1,500 members, RACUSJ has brought together people from different faculties, backgrounds, and generations under one identity.

The carousel remembered the leaders who guided the club, the projects that left a mark, the recognition received, the work carried beyond borders, and the legacy passed from one generation to another.

Yet behind every year, project, and achievement were people, each carrying a story of their own.

And that was where Memory Lane continued.

More Than Memories, A Purpose

While Memory Lane centred on stories and shared experiences, the initiative also reflected a broader purpose aligned with Rotary’s values.

The project connected with the Rotary Focus Areas of Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention and Community Economic Development, while contributing to SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.

Through creating a space for people from different chapters of RACUSJ to reconnect, share experiences, and preserve their stories, Memory Lane encouraged connection, learning, community engagement, and meaningful partnerships.

In doing so, remembering the past also became a way of strengthening the community that carries its legacy forward.

From Memories to Conversations

The memories shared by the community led to another question:

“What happens when we sit down and talk about those memories?”

That question became the Memory Lane Podcast.

Recorded on 25 August, the podcast brought together Rtn. Rtr. PP Praneeth Madusanka and Rtr. PP Nethmi Bandara, each bringing their own experiences and stories from their Rotaract journeys.

The conversations went beyond positions, titles, and achievements. They explored the experiences behind the journey, unforgettable moments, influential people, challenges, friendships, lessons, and the memories that remained long after particular projects and leadership terms had ended.

There were stories, reflections, and laughter, along with moments of looking back and recognising how much had changed over the years.

Because a Rotaract journey is rarely defined by official milestones alone.

Sometimes, it is the smallest moments that stay with us the longest.

Three Episodes. Countless Memories.

Released across 2–4 September, the three podcast episodes continued the Memory Lane journey from remembering the past to understanding what those experiences meant.

The conversations offered glimpses into the people behind the journey and the moments that shaped them. More than simply documenting RACUSJ’s history, the podcast created a space for different experiences to exist side by side.

It reminded us that everyone has their own version of Memory Lane.

Because Everyone Has a Memory

A sixteen-year history can be told through dates, presidents, projects, awards, numbers, and milestones.

But it can also be told through memories.

A first project.
A first friendship.
A difficult day that became a lesson.
A celebration that everyone still remembers.
A photograph that brings back an entire chapter.
A person who made university feel a little more like home.

These are the stories that may not always appear in official records, yet often become the ones people remember most.

That is what Memory Lane set out to capture.

Not one story.
Not one generation.
Not one project.

But the many little stories that, together, became 16 years of RACUSJ.

The Lane Ends, The Memories Stay

Memory Lane began with a question and grew into a collection of answers.

It brought memories from different people into one space, revisited sixteen years of history, and turned those memories into conversations that could be shared and remembered once again.

Because time moves forward.

Projects end.
People graduate.
Leadership changes.
New chapters begin.

But the memories created along the way remain.

Perhaps that is the most beautiful part of looking back, realising that the moments we once lived without a second thought have quietly become pieces of a much bigger story.

Sixteen years.
Countless memories.
One journey.

And as another chapter begins for RACUSJ, one thing remains:

The lane may end, but the memories stay.
