To celebrate International Mother Language Day this year, the International Service Avenue brought out a video where Rotaractors from India, Egypt, Tunisia, and Russia shared their prime greetings from their respective mother languages.

“Mother tongue” by its name itself implies the language which a person is exposed to since birth and a mother takes the responsibility of denoting the first language. It not only provides a foundation for one’s education and a type of connection with the community but also imparts an identity on an individual which embodies the culture of one’s ancestors.

In a deep sense, it is the language of the voice in one’s head, and also the language through which we primarily see and experience life. A Mother Tongue isn’t a collection of letters representing sounds, it’s much more, where it brings identity and culture to the human being. 

In a country like ours where communities share two different yet similar mother tongues communication and understanding between the two will be challenged, with the civil war serving as a brutal reminder of the disastrous aftermath a difference in the mother tongue can contribute to. As we sometimes tend to focus on negativities and differences we fail to experience the beauty of diversity and the contribution one has to the other.

You see the two tongues used by Sri Lankans aren’t that different after all. It’s ironic really, how the two alphabets have such striking similarities and the extent to which one has influenced the structure and vocabulary of the other that some scholars were erroneously led to believe that Sinhala and Tamil belonged to the same family of languages. These two languages do share indicators to enable building bridges amongst their speakers.

The Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has in fact been able to use language as a binding tool and have come up with creative ways to overcome the gap in differences of mother tongue and embrace its diversity both nationally and globally. 

Rotamates – a project by the International Service Avenue of RACUSJ which was held recently was an initiative where Language and cultural experiences were brought out to one stage. Rotractors from India, Nigeria, Peru, Ecuador, Egypt, Philippines, Russia, Turkey, Britain, and Tunisia joined us to showcase their diversity. 

The challenges that come with differences in mother tongue may be many, but the rewards of utilizing every will bind communities together. This year’s International Mother Language Day recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and it directs to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals’ focusing on leaving no one behind. 

An eye-opener is much needed for a new perspective because languages are among the most precious and at the same time the most fragile, treasures of mankind. So this February 21st let’s celebrate all mother tongues. In doing so we support inclusion and acknowledge that language diversity helps to enrich us all; that this diversity of languages is a treasure, not a barrier.

මව් බස දන්නෝ මව් හදුනන්නෝ – ජාත්‍යන්තර මව් භාෂා දිනය 2021

කෙනෙකුට තේරුම් ගත හැකි භාෂාවකින් පණිවිඩයක් යැවූ විට එය යන්නේ මොළයටයි. නමුත් එම පුද්ගලයාගේ මව් බසින් ඇමතුවොත් පණිවිඩය යන්නේ හදවතටයි යනුවෙන් වරක් නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා සදහන් කර ඇත.

තමන්ට උත්පත්තියෙන්ම මවගෙන් උරුම වන, තමන් කුඩා කල සිටම කතා කරනා භාෂාව මව් බසයි. භාෂාමය විවිධත්වය වැඩා වන විට මව් භාෂාව භාවිත නොකිරීමට වන සම්බන්ධයද වැඩිය. සංස්කෘත, ගොතික් වැනි භාෂා මළ භාෂා ගනයට වර්ගීකරණය වේ. මළ භාෂා යනු කිසිවෙකු භාවිත නොකරන භාෂාය.

පෙබරවාරි විසි එක් වන දිනම ලෝක මව් භාෂා දිනය ලෙස තෝරා ගත්තේ ඇයි දැයි ඔබට සිතෙනු ඇත. එහි යටගියාව මෙසේයි. පාකිස්තානය බංග්ලාදේශය යටත් කරගත් විට බංග්ලාදේශ රාජ්‍ය භාෂාව උර්දු බස කරන්නට බල කල අතර එයට විරුද්ධව බංග්ලාදේශ ජාතිකයන් සටන් කල අතර 1952 වසරෙ පෙබරවාරි 21දා එම ගැටුමෙන් සරසවි සිසුන් සිව්දෙනෙකු මිය යන ලදී. මව් භාෂාව වෙනුවෙන් සටන් කළ ඔවුන් සිහිකරනු වස් පෙබරවාරි විසි එක් වන දිනට මව් භාෂා දිනය සමරන්නට තීරණය කරන ලදී.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාව වැනි බහු භාෂා රටක ජනවර්ග එකිනෙකට වෙනස් මව් භාෂා භාවිත කලද ඒවායේ සමානකම් ඇත. තිස් වසරක කුරිරු යුද්ධයහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙස භාෂා අතර බාධකය තවත් වැඩි විය. ඇතමුන් සමහර භාෂා පිලිබඳව සෘණාත්මක ව සිතනා සමහරු භාෂා අතර සුන්දරත්වය විදීමට අපොහොසත් ව ඇත. එකම භාෂා පවුලකට අයත් වන දමිළ හා සිංහල භාෂා වල සමාන කම් රැසකි. එනමුදු අදහස් පළකිරීමේ දී භාෂාව බාධකයක් ව ඇත.

මව් බසේ වෙනස්කම් සමග බොහෝ අභියෝග ඇතිවේ. එම වෙනස්කම් නිසා බෙදීම් ඇතිවීම ශෝචනීය ය. කිසිවෙකු අතපසු නොකර අධ්‍යාපනයට හා සමාජයට බහුභාෂා ක්‍රම යොදාගැනීම මෙවර මව් භාෂා දිනයෙ අරමුණයි. අනෙකුත් භාෂා වල වචන වැලදගැනීමෙන් ඉංග්‍රීසි භාෂාව වේගයෙන් පෝෂණය වෙද්දී දේව භාෂා යැයි සම්මත සංස්කෘත වැනි භාෂා අභාවයට ගොස් ඇත.

ශ්‍රී ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය රොටරැක්ට් සමාජය භාෂා බාධක ජය ගැනීමට අප තාක්ෂණය ඔස්සේ නවමු මුහුණුවරකින් කටයුතු කළෙමු. විවිධ මව් භාෂා අතර ඇති වෙනස්කම් ආදරයෙන් වැලදගැනීමට අප සංගමයේ ජාත්‍යන්තර සේවා අංශයෙන් ROTAMATES ව්‍යාපෘතිය ඉදිරිපත් කරන ලදී.  එම ව්‍යාපෘතිය මගින් ඉන්දියාව, නයිජීරියාව, පේරු රාජ්‍යය, එක්වදෝරය, ඊජීප්තුව, පිලිපීනය, රුසියාව, තුර්කිය, බ්‍රිතාන්‍යය හා ටියුනීසියාව වැනි රටවල භාෂා, සංස්කෘතික ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන්ට සමීප කරවීමට හා අපගේ භාෂා, සංස්කෘතිය ඔවුන්ට සමීප කරවීමට ක්‍රියාකරන ලදී.

එමෙන් ම රොටරැක් ජාත්‍යන්තර සේවා අංශයෙන් මෙවර ජාත්‍යන්තර  මව් බස් දිනය සැමරීමට ඉන්දියාව, ඊජිප්තුව, ටියුනීසියාව, රුසියාව යන රට වල රොටරැක්වරු මව් බසින් අමතන ආකාරය හා මූලික ආචාර සමාචාර විධි   පිළිබදව වීඩියෝවක් තිළිණ කරන ලදී.

භාෂාව යනු මානුෂ වර්ගයාගේ වටිනාම, සුවිශේෂී ම, හා ඉක්මනින් වෙනස් වීමට බඳුන්වන මෙන්ම එම වෙනස දරාගත නොහැකි තැන නැසෙන අපූර්ව දෙයකි. භාෂාව සංස්කෘතීන් දෙකක් එකට යා කරන පාලමක් මිස සංස්කෘතීන් දෙකක් වෙන් කරන පවුරක් නොකරගනිමු. ලෝක මව් භාෂා දිනයදී අපි භාෂා හා සංස්කෘතික විවිධත්වය විවෘත මනසකින් දකින්නට මෙම දිනය අවස්තාවක් කරගනිමු.
