All Saints’ Day – 01 november 2026

Written by: Rtr. Sanudi Denawaka

As the golden days of October gently give way to the freshness of November, the Christian world welcomes a day filled with profound meaning, spiritual reflection, and timeless inspiration. Every year, on 1 November, millions of Christians celebrate All Saints’ Day, a special occasion dedicated to honouring the saints who have illuminated the world through their unwavering faith, extraordinary kindness, selfless sacrifices, and devotion to God. It is not merely a day marked on the religious calendar; it is a celebration of lives that have become beautiful examples of how humanity can be transformed through love, compassion, and faith.

But have we ever stopped to wonder what makes a person truly saintly? Is it the recognition of the world, the greatness of their achievements, or the miracles associated with their names? Perhaps the answer lies much deeper. A saint is remembered not simply for what they accomplished, but for the goodness they brought into the lives of others. Saints are those who chose love over hatred, forgiveness over revenge, generosity over selfishness, and faith over fear. Their lives remind us that true greatness is not measured by how high we rise, but by how many hearts we touch along the way.

The roots of All Saints’ Day can be traced back to the early centuries of Christianity. During those times, Christians gathered to honour martyrs who courageously remained faithful to their beliefs despite persecution. As Christianity spread across different regions, the number of martyrs and recognised holy people increased. Consequently, the Church established a special occasion to commemorate all saints, including those whose names were never recorded in history. The celebration eventually became firmly associated with 1 November in the Western Christian tradition. Today, it stands as a universal expression of gratitude for the lives of those who devoted themselves to God and inspired generations through their extraordinary examples.

Throughout history, countless saints have left behind remarkable stories that continue to touch human hearts. Among them, St Francis of Assisi stands out for his deep love for nature, animals, and the poor. His life teaches us to respect every living creature and recognise the beauty of God’s creation. St Teresa of Calcutta, affectionately known as Mother Teresa, dedicated herself to caring for the poorest and most vulnerable members of society, demonstrating that even the smallest act of kindness can bring hope into someone’s life. Similarly, St Therese of Lisieux showed the world that holiness does not always require extraordinary achievements; it can be found in performing ordinary duties with extraordinary love. Though these individuals lived in different periods and faced different challenges, they shared a common purpose: to make the world a more compassionate place.

On this special day, churches around the world are filled with a unique atmosphere of devotion and celebration. Beautiful floral decorations, glowing candles, religious images, and melodious hymns create an environment of peace and spirituality. Special Holy Masses and prayer services are conducted to honour the saints and reflect upon their teachings. Christians gather with their families and communities, expressing gratitude for the spiritual guidance and inspiration offered by these holy figures. In many cultures, the occasion is also associated with visiting cemeteries, placing flowers on graves, and lighting candles as expressions of remembrance and respect.

Although All Saints’ Day is often mentioned alongside Halloween and All Souls’ Day, each occasion carries its own significance. Halloween, traditionally known as All Hallows’ Eve, takes place on 31 October, the evening before All Saints’ Day. The following day, 2 November, is observed as All Souls’ Day in the Catholic tradition, when prayers are offered for the faithful departed. Together, these occasions form an important period of remembrance and reflection within the Christian calendar.

However, the beauty of All Saints’ Day extends far beyond church walls, religious ceremonies, and historical stories. Its message reaches into our everyday lives, reminding us that holiness is not simply something associated with distant historical figures or people recognised by religious institutions. It is also reflected in the everyday actions of ordinary people. A mother who makes countless sacrifices for her children, a teacher who patiently guides struggling students, a stranger who offers help without expecting anything in return, or a person who forgives someone despite being hurt—all demonstrate values that lie at the heart of saintly living. These simple yet meaningful actions may never appear in history books, but they can leave unforgettable impressions on human hearts.

In an age where the world is rapidly changing, where technology connects millions yet loneliness continues to exist, and where success is often measured through wealth, popularity, and power, the message of All Saints’ Day becomes especially important. It encourages us to pause amid our busy lives and reconsider what truly matters. It reminds us that kindness is not a weakness, forgiveness is not a defeat, and helping others is never a waste of time. The saints teach us that even when surrounded by difficulties, we can choose to remain hopeful, compassionate, and faithful to our values.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful lessons of this celebration is that we do not need to perform miracles to make a difference. We do not need to be famous, wealthy, or powerful to inspire others. Sometimes, a comforting word can restore someone’s confidence, a small act of generosity can bring happiness to a struggling family, and a simple expression of love can turn an ordinary day into a memorable one. The world does not always need extraordinary heroes; sometimes, it simply needs ordinary people willing to do extraordinary things with love.

As the candles burn brightly in churches and prayers rise towards heaven on this meaningful occasion, let us not remember the saints merely as figures from the past. Instead, let us allow their stories to become a guiding light for our present and future. Let us learn to see goodness in others, extend a helping hand to those in need, respect every human being, and bring hope wherever it is needed. After all, the true honour we can offer the saints is not simply remembering their names, but continuing the beautiful values they stood for.

All Saints’ Day is ultimately a celebration of lives that proved love is stronger than hatred, kindness is greater than selfishness, and faith can shine even in the darkest moments. Saints may have left this earthly world, but their examples continue to live in the hearts of millions. Their names may belong to history, their stories may belong to generations, but their message belongs to humanity forever.

This 1 November, let us remember the saints, celebrate their legacy, and, above all, make a promise to let a little more goodness, compassion, and love shine through our own lives. For the world becomes a holier place not only when we remember the saints, but also when we follow the goodness they left behind.
