International Youth Day – 12 August 2026

According to UN estimates, there are around 1.2 billion young people aged 15–24 worldwide, representing approximately 16% of the global population. We may never meet most of them, and their lives may look completely different, even though they belong to the same generation and may share similar dreams. By 2030, this number is expected to reach nearly 1.3 billion.

According to UN SDG reporting, in 2024, around one in five young people worldwide were not in employment, education or training (NEET), representing approximately 259 million young people. This reflects the different realities young people experience. Within the same generation, some are pursuing higher education, while others are searching for their first job or a new opportunity. This shows why, even within one generation and despite having common aspirations, young people can experience very different lives.

The UN reported global youth unemployment at 12.9% in 2024. Young people dream of securing meaningful employment and building a good life. However, differences in their circumstances can make it difficult for many to achieve the future they envision. Education, skills development, career opportunities, entrepreneurship and equal access to opportunities are therefore essential for young people to achieve their goals.

The official theme for International Youth Day 2026 is “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” Here, different contexts refer to the different countries, cultures, family backgrounds, economic situations, educational opportunities, levels of access to technology, challenges and social environments in which young people grow and live. Common aspirations refer to the goals that young people around the world often share, such as quality education, meaningful and decent employment, good mental and physical well-being, personal growth and the opportunity to build a better future.

There are many challenges faced by young people today. Unequal access to education and employment, the transition into adulthood, and challenges related to mental health and well-being are among the main concerns. When we talk about unequal access to education, the dream of learning may be common, but the opportunity to learn is not always equal. Education is one of the most common aspirations among young people, but access to quality education differs greatly depending on family income, location, gender, infrastructure, digital access and social circumstances.

Regarding employment, we often tell young people to build their future, but not every young person is given the same tools or opportunities to build it. This can be caused by lack of experience, skills gaps, limited job opportunities, economic conditions and pressure to choose a career at an early stage. Young people also face various social and mental well-being challenges due to academic pressure, career uncertainty, financial pressure, social comparison, and the growing influence of social media and technology.

Leadership is a very important quality for young people because leadership is not always about holding a position; it is about making the decision to take responsibility. Leadership can begin with taking responsibility for a small task, speaking up about a problem, making thoughtful decisions, supporting others and learning from failure. Volunteering means turning dreams into action. We can understand the world better when we step outside our own experiences. Through volunteering, young people can give their time and skills to their communities, understand challenges beyond their own experiences, support people who have fewer opportunities, develop empathy and learn about different communities.

Teamwork means working with different people to achieve a common purpose. A team does not need people with the same ideas, personalities, skills or backgrounds. Instead, a strong team needs people who can bring their differences together, learn from one another and work towards a common purpose.

We may not share the same opportunities, the same struggles or even the same starting points. Our journeys may be different, but the hopes we carry can bring us closer. Through the choices we make, the people we support, the teams we build and the communities we serve, each of us has a part to play. After all, we may live different lives and walk different paths, but when our dreams bring us together, we become more than just a generation waiting for the future — we become the generation creating it.
