Empowering Women to Bloom Beyond Boundaries

Strength, resilience, and compassion define the spirit of every woman who rises above challenges and continues to grow. Inspired by this belief, the Community Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura introduced SheBlooms, a meaningful initiative dedicated to uplifting women and girls across Sri Lanka.

Designed as a multi-dimensional humanitarian project, SheBlooms focused on creating opportunities, improving well-being, and restoring dignity for women and girls. The initiative also aligned closely with several global development priorities including United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Climate Action (SDG 13), No Poverty (SDG 1), and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10).

Over the course of three impactful months, SheBlooms unfolded through five meaningful phases, each addressing a unique challenge faced by women in society while reinforcing the project’s core belief—that every woman deserves the chance to bloom.

SheSecure – Standing with Communities After Disaster

The journey of SheBlooms began with SheSecure, a relief initiative aimed at supporting families affected by severe flooding caused by the Ditwa Cyclone. In partnership with Emerge Global Sri Lanka and Lanka Life Line, the project reached flood-affected families in the Kandy District.

Forty families received essential supplies, including 40 pillows, 30 mattresses, 40 bedsheets, 30 towels and 30 toys. These items provided comfort and stability to households rebuilding their lives after a disaster. What may appear as simple necessities carried profound meaning – offering warmth, reassurance, and hope during a difficult time.

SheEarns – Creating Opportunities for Women Entrepreneurs

Empowerment took an economic turn in the second phase, SheEarns, which focused on supporting women-led businesses. Ten small and medium-scale women entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to showcase their products through a marketplace held within the premises of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

The initiative provided stall spaces free of charge, allowing entrepreneurs to present their brands, attract new customers, and increase their income. Each business earned an average of LKR 7,000, demonstrating how access to opportunities can significantly impact women striving to grow their enterprises.

More importantly, the experience strengthened confidence and encouraged women to believe in the potential of their own businesses.

SheLearns – Empowerment Through Awareness

Recognizing that knowledge is a powerful tool for empowerment, the third phase, SheLearns, focused on education and awareness.

With Whisper as the Official Title Partner and Indira Cancer Trust as the Official Education Partner, the project organized eight educational sessions on menstrual health, hygiene, and breast cancer awareness.

  • Seminar 1: Breast and cervical cancer awareness (online session)
  • Seminar 2: Breast and cervical cancer awareness for undergraduates (online session)
  • Seminar 3: Breast and cervical cancer awareness for Girl Guides (online session)
  • Seminar 4: Breast and cervical cancer awareness at Sapugaskanda Vishaka Balika Vidyalaya
  • Seminar 5: Menstrual health and hygiene awareness at Malabe Sri Rahula Balika Vidyalaya
  • Seminar 6: Menstrual health and hygiene awareness for Tangalle Balika Vidyalaya (online session)
  • Seminar 7: Menstrual health and hygiene awareness for Aluvihare Royal College – Matale, Buddhagosha Maha Vidyalaya – Matale, Akuramboda Junior School  – Matale.
  • Seminar 8: Menstrual health and hygiene awareness for Girl Guides

The awareness programs were conducted for school students, youth groups, and university undergraduates across several regions, reaching more than 850 participants. These sessions provided accurate information, challenged common misconceptions, and encouraged young women to take charge of their health with confidence.

The message of empowerment was further amplified by media partners including Sunday Observer and Lakehouse, helping the campaign reach audiences across the country.

SheSpeaks – Encouraging Open Conversations

In many communities, important topics related to women’s health remain surrounded by silence and stigma. The fourth phase, SheSpeaks, sought to change that narrative.

Through a strategic public awareness campaign using social media content and video storytelling, the initiative encouraged conversations around menstrual health, breast cancer, female genital mutilation, and gender equality.

Reaching over 11,000 online viewers, the campaign helped break long-standing taboos and highlighted the importance of open dialogue. SheSpeaks reinforced a simple but powerful truth—when women speak openly about their experiences and health, meaningful change begins.

SheIsSeen – Supporting Those Who Are Often Overlooked

The final phase of SheBlooms, SheIsSeen, focused on individuals whose struggles often remain unnoticed.

In Kirindiwela, an elderly bedridden woman living in extreme financial hardship received essential clothing, homecare items, and dry rations to support both her and her husband, who was battling kidney failure.

Another act of kindness reached a 17-year-old girl in Nuwara Eliya, whose mobility had been limited for years. Through the donation of a multifunctional wheelchair, the initiative restored her independence and opened the door to new possibilities.

These gestures reflected the deeper purpose of SheBlooms—ensuring that no woman feels invisible or forgotten.

A Journey of Collective Compassion

Throughout its duration, SheBlooms reached more than 1,000 women and girls across nine districts, demonstrating how collective action can create lasting impact.

The success of the project was made possible through the dedication of its partners and supporters, including Whisper, Emerge Global Sri Lanka, Lanka Life Line, Indira Cancer Trust, Sunday Observer, Lakehouse, Home Printer, and Plants Sri Lanka.

Special appreciation is also extended to generous donors Judy Dinusha Karlsson, Rebecca Wijewardena, and the Karlsson family and friends, whose support strengthened the project’s ability to reach those who needed it most.

Blooming Infinitely

SheBlooms stands as a powerful reminder that empowerment begins with compassion, awareness, and opportunity. From disaster relief and entrepreneurship to education and advocacy, the initiative touched lives in meaningful ways.

More than a project, SheBlooms became a symbol of hope—one that proves that when women are supported, encouraged, and empowered, they do not simply grow.

They bloom infinitely.
