Where Peace Begins

International Day of Peace – 21 September 2026

Written by: Rtr. Guwani Harshika

Imagine, for a moment, a world where the sounds of conflict are replaced by the sound of people listening to one another. In such a world, differences do not instantly turn into divisions, and choosing understanding over anger becomes the norm. Perhaps that is truly where peace begins.

Although peace is often simply defined as the absence of war, it is a far broader concept. Peace can be found in the safety of a school-going child, in a family living free from fear, in communities that respect diversity, and in people who choose dialogue when faced with disagreement. Peace is not merely a state of affairs between nations; it is something that originates within individuals.

Why the International Day of Peace Matters

Yet, the world we live in continues to grapple with conflict, violence, displacement, discrimination, and social divisions. Millions of people across the globe endure the consequences of conflict, while others live in uncertainty regarding their safety and their future. At the same time, even within peaceful communities, divisions can emerge, driven by intolerance, hatred, harassment, and misunderstanding, gradually driving people apart.

Perhaps this is why the International Day of Peace is so significant. Observed annually on September 21, this day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981. It is a day dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. It reminds us that peace is not merely the responsibility of governments and international organizations, but a shared responsibility for us all.

The International Day of Peace represents far more than just a date on the calendar. It is an invitation to pause for a moment and ask ourselves what kind of world we are helping to create.

Building a Culture of Peace

In today’s interconnected world, just as an act of hatred can spread across borders in seconds, so too can an act of kindness. A message of understanding can reach someone we have never even met. A young person who chooses respect over discrimination, a community that embraces diverse ideas, or an organization that brings people together, any of these can contribute to building a culture of peace.

Peace also relies on recognizing that diversity is a natural part of humanity. We may have different languages, cultures, beliefs, backgrounds, and ideas, but these differences need not divide us. When we learn to listen without jumping to conclusions, exchange ideas without hostility, and express disagreements without disrespect, we lay the foundation for building peaceful communities.

The Role of Young People

This responsibility is particularly significant for young people. Youth are not merely the future of society; they are already active members of their communities. Through education, volunteerism, community service, awareness programs, and meaningful dialogue, young people can contribute to creating an environment where respect and cooperation become part of everyday life.

What Can We Do?

So, what can we do?

It can start with something small. We can choose our words more carefully. We can stand up against harassment and discrimination. We can listen to those who hold views different from our own. We can support individuals who feel marginalized within society. We can use social media to spread understanding rather than hate. Organizations and communities can create programs that encourage dialogue, cultural exchange, inclusivity, and cooperation.

It may seem that none of these actions alone is sufficient to change the world. Yet, peace has never been built through a single, monumental act. It is built upon the countless decisions that ordinary people make every day. Perhaps the true meaning of the International Day of Peace lies right there.

Peace Begins With Us

Peace is not merely something to be sought in distant lands; it is something that can be actively cultivated within our homes, universities, workplaces, and communities, and even in the way we speak to one another.

If we aspire to a more peaceful world, we cannot simply wait for it to arrive; we must be active partners in creating it.

For the future of peace does not lie somewhere far away; it begins with the decisions we make today, the respect we show to others, and the courage we find to choose understanding over division.

After all, while peace may begin in the world around us, it grows within each of us.
